PAT
BAILEY: DECEMBER 1ST 2011
I
left school aged 16 with 5 ‘O’ levels and became a ceramic lab technician and
then a school lab technician, finishing work to have my first baby.
I'm
an OU graduate (an original 'A' student - 480 points at 60 points a year from
1971 - 1978) and I've been an OU tutor-counsellor (now called Associate
Lecturer) since November 1979, originally on the maths foundation course and
MST204. I currently tutor MST121 (both presentations), MS221 and MU123 in
Stoke-On-Trent (region 4), as well as three maths education courses, ME625, ME626 and ME627, the new masters modules
for Primary Maths Specialist teachers (ME830, ME831) and the Openings course
Y162. I spent a week as a tutor at Bath University on MEXR624 in July 2007 - a
very enjoyable and stimulating residential school. I'm also a Mathematics PGCE
tutor with the OU, on the Flexible ITE course.
I am currently the Co-Chair of the course ME627, I monitor MU123, MST121
& MS221 TMAs in region 4 and ME627 TMAs.
I am
almost through my second OU degree (very slow - I did the foundation course to
start this, in 1979 - my third!). I studied T171 in 2000; I've also taken
ME624, T186 and MA290, History of Maths since then; I was awarded a BSc (Open)
in August 2008, and hope to eventually take two or three more level three
modules (70 credits needed) to be awarded a BSc honours degree – I have
registered for a maths module for February 2012.
I
did my PhD and PGCE at my local university, Keele - I was offered a grant for
the PhD because I was an OU graduate.
I
was a mathematics school teacher from 1986 - 2004, and the school examination
officer until December 2006, when I took early retirement so that I could spend
more time on my OU work, and see more of Rosa, my first grandchild. I relish
the extra challenges that the OU (and Rosa and Nina) give me!
My
three children were born in 1973, 1976 and 1979 while I was doing my first OU
degree and the start of the second one! I also have two stepsons, Jamie and Ashley and I am married to Bill. We are
hoping for lots of grandchildren from our kids!
Rosa,
was born in London on 14th February 2006 - 8 lb 8 oz. She looked exactly like
her dad did, when he was born, although she now looks more like her mum.
Nina,
was born at home on 29th October 2008, weighing (8 1b 9 oz) and all
measurements exactly like Rosa’s! I've put photos of Rosa and Nina at one day
old together, and they look like the same baby.
This
is a photograph of Rosa and Nina in August 2010. Nina is now almost as tall as
Rosa 5 cm shorter) and they are nearly the same weight. Apart from long
trousers, they both wear clothes for the same age.

This is me,
accepting an OU teaching award in 2004, for my voluntary work on various First
Class forums.
Rosa says that I still look the same,
except that my hair is longer, I have no fringe and I have more white hairs!
